Casal de Loivos Velha Geração Reserva red 2008 DOC Douro
Tasted November 2013
Appearance - Ruby, medium plus intensity
Nose - clean, developing, medium intensity. Dusty notes, dry oak, mineral with graphite, stony. Some fresh blackberry. Tight and closed.
Palate - dry, medium plus acidity, very grippy, grainy high level tannin, medium body and medium plus alcohol. Medium flavor intensity, there's blackberry, some fig, very spicy character, mainly black pepper, chalk, granite and dry oak notes. Medium length dominated by oak.
Conclusions (15/20) - Not talkative at all. This defying red is old style indeed with an austere nose and palate. A slight alcohol unbalance, not too hot but very spicy. Tannin a bit on the harsh side and drying out the palate. Hopefully time in bottle will help integrate and mellow, essential to decant for now as it is very astringent.
