Donnafugata La Fuga Chardonnay 2007 DOC Contessa Entellina, Sicily, Italy
Tasted May 2012
Appearance - a bright medium intensity golden hue, almost rimless and with some visible tears.
Nose - clean, fully developed aromatics with medium plus intensity, showing ripe stone fruits resembling apricot, ripe red apple and some sherry like aromas hinting at slightly oxidative character as the colour did also.
Palate - dry, medium acidity, medium plus warming alcohol level and body. Flavour wise it maintains the medium plus intensity once again of ripe, almost cooked apricots, lots of stony and smoky minerality, kernel notes of roasted almonds and a saline finish through the medium plus length.
Conclusions (17/20) - very good quality here, an original wine with sense of place and personality. Very spacious and round mouthfeel, ripe fruit notes mellowed with mineral notes that render a complex ensemble. A wine for food but also for thought! It is ready to drink but its structure lends it room for improvement for the next couple of years.
