José Maria da Fonseca - Colecção Privada Domingos Soares Franco Verdelho 2011
Grapes - 100% Verdelho
Appearance - clear and bright, pale lemon green colour. Some tears and a watery rim.
Nose - clean nose, youthful, medium intensity aromatics showing distinct citrus notes of ripe lemons and lime, green apple, some passion fruit, a fresh grassy hint, some fresh gooseberry and a steely mineral undertone.
Palate - a dry wine with medium plus acidity level, a medium body and alcohol level. Medium intensity flavours, very consistent with the nose with fresh citric and green fruits accompanied by tropical and mineral notes, not just steely here but with a hint of rubber. Medium plus length.
Conclusions(16/20) - very good wine, well defined fresh fruits, the citric and green notes balanced by the tropical undertone, zesty character from the refreshing acidity and a nice structured, supple palate. A wine that lets the grape variety shine, very well made. A refreshing drink but perfect for fatty fish dishes.
There is an odd hint of fresh cashew fruit, which was much more evident when I tasted the wine previous to bottling, that I personally find very amusing.
