Adega do Cantor Onda Nova Syrah 2007, red regional Algarve
Onda Nova Syrah 2007
Tasted April 2012
Appearance - bright and clear deep ruby colour.
Nose - clean and youthful, shows medium plus intensity of dark plum, some red fruits, some coffee notes, garrigue, and a herbal hint.
Palate - wine is dry, with medium minus acidity and easy going soft low tannin level. A medium body and a medium plus alcohol level, but well integrated with the ensemble. Medium plus flavour intensity, consistent with the nose, showing ripe red fruits, strawberry, sweet juicy cherry, blueberry, plum and some sweet spice on the medium length.
Conclusions (15/20) - good quality wine, has a nice fruit definition, a silky voluptuous mouth-feel, and although on the ripe side and lacking in acidity it still manages to be a pretty enjoyable drink. It has sense of place, showing off the high sugar levels grapes can attain in the Algarve. Very easy to like, hedonistic and with good drink ability, I can see it flying off the shelves of Algarve stores in the summer. Main flaw for me, I wish I could find more Syrah in it.
