Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Fairtrade Pinotage ‘Leap Point’ 2012, Western Cape, South Africa
Tasted May 2013
Appearance - clear and bright of medium plus intensity purple colour. a few thick tears visible, slowly descending.
Nose - clean, youthful aromas with medium plus intensity. Lots of ripe dark cherry notes, some plum and strawberry. Fresh herbal notes of eucalyptus, a trace of meaty character and just a glimpse of volatile like varnish.
Palate - dry, a high and mouthwatering acidity, medium level spicy tannins, medium body and medium plus alcohol although quite well integrated. Medium plus flavour intensity with lots of juicy ripe cherry, some plum and strawberry. Some creamy and spicy oaky notes and quite fresh herbal aftertaste also with a tarry touch and some sour cherry. Medium plus, pleasing length.
Conclusions (16/20) - good quality, quite nice ensemble, although focused on its rich, ripe and sweet fruit character it has some nice herbal and mineral nuances. Smooth palate just spiked by some spicy but ripe tannins. An effortless drink perfect for every day indulgence and totally ready to hit your glass.
